Yoga

Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India and has thrived for over 5,000 years. Those who sat in meditation for eight or more hours a day, looking inward to achieve enlightenment, realized that their bodies were suffering from inactivity. They developed asanas (postures) to move and stretch their limbs so they could be more comfortable as they continued to sit in meditation. Each pose has specific physical benefits. And all are designed to create personal balance by uniting body with mind, and mind with spirit.

Since its popular introduction in the U.S. in the 1950s, yoga continues to be well-recognized for its effective low-impact workout and wide range of health benefits. Today, yoga studios are mainstream, with new style variations emerging all the time.

Yoga is a way to look and feel younger while building flexibility and strength. As our bodies age, we will notice changes occurring in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. Our joints stiffen up, our energy level is not what it used to be, and we have less stamina as our bodies continue to endure the strains of daily living. Yoga is an excellent and proven way to keep the body flexible and strong as the stresses of modern life threaten to take their toll on us. Yoga is a complete system that not only helps keep the body vital but also recharges the spirit, by incorporating breathing techniques, meditation and deep relaxation.

My yoga practice has been ongoing since I took my first class in junior college in 1969. After just one semester of yoga, I felt more energized than ever before. I continued to practice and took classes on and off through my 20s and 30s. When I moved to Sonoma County in the 1990s, I found a wonderful yoga teacher and continued to deepen my practice with enthusiasm and delight. In 2011, I completed my training as a Certified Yoga Teacher―one of the most joyful and satisfying things I have ever done.

I now offer my knowledge and passion for yoga to you. I teach classes and offer private sessions to help you become healthier and feel more alive with each visit to the yoga mat.
